
The main committees of the United Nations General Assembly are: (1) First Committee (Disarmament & International Security); (2) Second Committee (Economic & Financial); (3) Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian & Cultural); (4) Fourth Committee (Special Political & Decolonization); (5) Fifth Committee (Administrative & Budgetary); and (6) Sixth Committee (Legal).
- First Committee (Disarmament & International Security): deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community and seeks out solutions to the challenges in the international security regime.
- Second Committee (Economic & Financial): responsible for agenda items related to economic, financial and environmental affairs. Main issues addressed by the Committee include the following: -Macroeconomic policy questions.
- Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian & Cultural): deals with human rights, humanitarian affairs and social matters. The Third Committee meets every year in early October and aims to finish its work by the end of November.
- Fourth Committee (Special Political & Decolonization): deals with a diverse set of political issues, including UN peacekeeping and peaceful uses of outer space. However, the issues of decolonization and the Middle East take up most of its time.
- Fifth Committee (Administrative & Budgetary): deals with internal United Nations administrative and budgetary matters.
- Sixth Committee (Legal): deals primarily with legal matters and is the primary forum for the consideration of international law and other legal matters concerning the United Nations.
