United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

The OHCHR, or the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, is the principal UN entity responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally. It was established in 1993 to address human rights issues, ensure the universal respect for human rights, and prevent violations.

The OHCHR works to:

  • Promote Human Rights: Advocate for the implementation of international human rights laws, treaties, and standards.
  • Monitor and Report: Track human rights situations around the world and provide independent reports on abuses and violations.
  • Support Countries: Provide technical assistance to countries, such as training for national institutions and help in drafting human rights legislation.
  • Raise Awareness: Increase global awareness on human rights issues through education, communication, and advocacy.
  • Address Violations: Investigate and intervene in cases of severe human rights violations, often through special rapporteurs and working groups.

OHCHR is involved in issues like racial discrimination, torture, women’s rights, the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples, freedom of expression, and the protection of vulnerable populations. It operates independently and works closely with other UN bodies, governments, civil society organizations, and human rights defenders.
